Cambodian Human Rights Commission to Develop App for Citizen Reporting

PHNOM PENH: The Cambodian Human Rights Commission (CHRC) has said it plans to create a mobile application for citizens to use to report human rights violations and have them resolved in a timely manner.

Speaking to the media during an event to comemorate the 75th Anniversary of International Human Rights Day at the Royal University of Phnom Penh on Thursday morning, 8 December 2022, the President of the CHRC, Keo Remy, said that the commission’s technical working group has been studying the development of a mobile application to allow citizens to report human rights violations, and is now ready to move forward with the project, however, finding the budget is still a problem.

"Going forward, we can use this mobile app, we just click to file a complaint from anywhere in Cambodia, [the complaints] can come from anywhere and there is no need to file a hard copy to the Human Rights Commission," he said.

He added that resolving issues related to civil rights in Cambodia is very important in order to reduce the anger of people who have been treated unjustly.

"It is the actions of some powerful individuals that have money, bad character and look down on the poor, that sometimes when they experience a little bit of conflict, they use their money to arrest people and put them in jail," he said. "That's why the Human Rights Commission is [particularly] helping underaged and underprivileged children, we guarantee to shift them from prisons to correctional centers in order to facilitate this work."

Keo Remy believes that after the launch of the app, the number of lawsuits submitted related to human rights violations may increase, while this year the CHRC received a little more than 20 human rights complaints.
